Key Highlights

Slim contra-angled forceps for atraumatic removal of maxillary root stumps and retained root tips

Description

The Waldent Tooth Extraction Forceps Upper Roots No. 197 is a precision-engineered instrument designed for the atraumatic removal of maxillary root stumps and retained root tips. Forged from high-grade surgical stainless steel, it delivers the strength, corrosion resistance, and dimensional stability demanded in routine and surgical exodontia. The slim, contra-angled beaks taper to conform closely to the contour of thin upper roots, allowing the operator to seat the working end deep within the periodontal ligament space for a secure, slip-free grip on fragments where the crown has fractured or decayed away. The handle geometry supports the correct palm-up maxillary position, channelling controlled apical and rotational force to the beaks while keeping the clinician’s hand comfortable and fatigue-free. Serrated inner surfaces enhance traction on smooth root surfaces, reducing the risk of slippage and further fracture. Autoclavable and built for repeated sterilisation, it is an essential addition to any oral surgery setup.

Key Features

  • Slim, contra-angled beaks designed to grip thin upper root stumps and retained root tips.
  • High-grade surgical stainless steel — strong, corrosion-resistant, durable.
  • Deep-seating beaks lock into the PDL space for a secure, slip-free hold.
  • Serrated inner surface improves traction and reduces slippage.
  • Ergonomic handles support the palm-up maxillary position with less fatigue.

Directions for Use

Before extraction

  • Verify the instrument is sterile, intact, and the beaks close evenly without play at the joint.
  • Confirm radiographically the root position, length, and any curvature or ankylosis.
  • Achieve profound local anaesthesia (buccal + palatal infiltration for maxillary roots).
  • Gently reflect the gingival cuff and, if needed, use an elevator to luxate the root and create an application point.

Grip and positioning

  • Hold the forceps in a palm-up grip, thumb and fingers controlling the handles, with the index finger guiding the beaks.
  • Approach from the buccal side, keeping the long axis of the beaks parallel to the long axis of the root.

Seating the beaks

  • Slide the slim beaks apically along the root surface, beneath the gingival margin, into the periodontal ligament space.
  • Seat as far apically as possible so the force is applied to the root, not the crown remnant, to prevent crushing.

Extraction movements

  • Begin with firm, controlled apical pressure to displace the centre of rotation apically and expand the socket.
  • Apply slow buccal and palatal pressure alternately to expand the cortical plates.
  • Add gentle rotational movement (effective for rounded, single-rooted maxillary roots) once mobility increases.
  • Deliver the root along the path of least resistance — usually buccal and occlusal.

Key precautions

  • Never use rapid or excessive force; it risks root fracture, buccal plate fracture, or beak slippage.
  • Re-seat the beaks deeper if they slip rather than forcing them.
  • Maintain a finger rest / socket support with the opposite hand to control the force.

After extraction

  • Inspect the root for completeness and check the socket for retained fragments.
  • Clean, ultrasonically rinse, lubricate the joint, and autoclave before reuse.
