Directions for Use

Pre-Treatment Preparation

• Sterilize the burs and stand via autoclave before clinical use
• Verify each bur’s diamond coating is intact and undamaged
• Achieve adequate local anesthesia and place rubber dam for airway protection
• Confirm the ceramic material type (zirconia, lithium disilicate, PFM) to plan the cutting approach
• Take pre-operative radiographs to assess underlying tooth structure and cement thickness

Ceramic Crown Sectioning

• Use the GEX-27 or GEX-28 ceramic cutting diamond to create the initial groove on the crown’s occlusal or buccal surface
• Cut through the ceramic in a controlled manner with copious water spray to prevent thermal damage and ceramic shattering
• Progress the cut through the full thickness of the ceramic — feel for the change in resistance as the bur reaches the underlying cement or tooth
• For PFM crowns, prepare to encounter the metal substructure — a specific metal-cutting bur may be needed

Gross Ceramic Reduction

• Use the EX-24 extra coarse diamond for aggressive reduction of ceramic bulk when cutting a full crown apart

Crown Removal Access

• Evaluate the tooth structure for damage from the sectioning procedure
• Plan the next restorative step — new preparation, endodontic access, or direct restoration as indicated

Ceramic Margin Adjustment (Intraoral)

• When adjusting an existing ceramic restoration in place, use CF-22B for chamfer margin work
• Follow with CF-22F fine grit for final polishing of the adjusted margin
• Use SO-20 and SO-21 for fine surface work and occlusal adjustments

Endodontic Access Through Ceramic Crowns

• Use GEX-27 or GEX-28 to penetrate through the ceramic occlusal surface
• Progress through the ceramic carefully with copious water spray
• Switch to standard cavity burs once through the ceramic and into the underlying tooth structure
• Maintain the access opening size to allow complete endodontic instrumentation

Cutting Technique for Ceramics
