Key Highlights

Tofflemire matrix system is used in Class II restorations

Description

GDC Tofflemire Matrix Retainer (MRTU)

The Universal (Tofflemire) matrix system is used in Class II restorations. The primary function of the matrix is to restore anatomic proximal contours and contact areas.

The matrix retainer has four parts:

  • Head – U-shaped, has three guides, or slots, for the position of the band
  • Locking vise – the sliding body that holds the band
  • Long knob – changes the diameter of the loop
  • Short knob – locks the band in place within the sliding body

Key Features

  • Light in Weight – Less fatigue
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Made of medical-grade stainless steel
  • Establish proper anatomic contour
  • Restore correct proximal contact relation
  • Prevent gingival overhang
  • Autoclavable at 35 degree

Directions for Use

  1. Preparation:

    • Ensure the Tofflemire matrix retainer and matrix band are properly sterilized before use. Check that the retainer is in good working condition, with the screw mechanism functioning smoothly.
  2. Positioning the Matrix Band:

    • Select an appropriate size matrix band for the tooth being restored. Insert the matrix band into the Tofflemire retainer, ensuring the band is positioned correctly, with the larger end towards the gingiva (gum) and the smaller end facing the crown.
  3. Placing the Matrix Band:

    • Insert the matrix band and retainer around the tooth. Position the band around the tooth in the area of the cavity preparation. Ensure the band wraps around the tooth securely to form a temporary wall for the filling material.
  4. Securing the Retainer:

    • Place the Tofflemire matrix retainer on the buccal (cheek) or lingual (tongue) side of the tooth, depending on access and the area of restoration. Tighten the locking mechanism to secure the matrix band in place around the tooth. Ensure the band fits snugly to prevent any gaps or misalignment during the filling procedure.
  5. Adjusting the Band:

    • Use the retainer’s screw mechanism to adjust the size of the matrix band as needed, ensuring a proper fit to the cavity preparation. Some models allow for tightening or loosening to create the appropriate contact and contour between the restored tooth and adjacent teeth.
  6. Restoring the Tooth:

    • With the matrix band securely in place, proceed with placing the restorative material (e.g., composite resin or amalgam) into the cavity. The matrix band provides a mold for the material, helping to recreate the natural contours of the tooth.
  7. Removal:

    • Once the filling material has set, remove the Tofflemire matrix retainer and matrix band carefully, ensuring no damage to the restoration. Check the contact points and the contour of the filled tooth.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Must clean after every use with warm water to remove blood, tissues, and mucus from the instruments.
  • Ultrasonic cleaning is recommended for all the instruments specially articulated instruments such as forceps, rongeurs, etc.
  • Use only standard and reputed brands of disinfectant solutions.
