Key Highlights

primary impression compound for edentulous patient

Description

MDM Primary impression compound is a thermoplastic material used for making preliminary impressions in edentulous patients. It softens when heated (around 55–60°C) and hardens at room temperature, allowing for accurate adaptation to oral tissues. This compound provides a stable, rigid impression after setting, making it ideal for initial denture fabrication. It is biocompatible, non-irritating, and reusable by reheating. Commonly used in  functional impressions, it ensures proper adaptation before making the final impression. Widely used in prosthodontics, the primary impression compound is essential for creating a precise foundation for complete dentures and other removable prosthetics.

Directions for Use

  • Preparation:

    • Select the appropriate compound: Choose the right type of impression compound based on the patient’s needs (working and setting temperature).
    • Heat the compound: Using a flame or water bath, heat the impression compound until it becomes soft and pliable. The material should be malleable but not too hot to burn the patient.
  • Loading the Tray:

    • Fill the impression tray: Load the softened compound into a suitable impression tray. Ensure that the tray is filled evenly, covering the entire surface area of the tray, and leave a slight excess to ensure a complete impression.
  • Taking the Impression:

    • Place the tray in the patient’s mouth: Gently place the tray in the patient’s mouth and press it into place, making sure it conforms to the dental arch and captures the details of the gums and teeth.
    • Allow it to set: The compound will cool and harden as it contacts the oral tissues. This process usually takes a few minutes. During this time, keep the tray in place until the material has completely set.
  • Removing the Impression:

    • Once the compound has solidified, carefully remove the impression tray from the patient’s mouth. The material will maintain its shape, capturing a clear imprint of the oral structures.
    • Inspect the impression: Check for any distortions or areas that may require additional material for a more accurate reproduction.
  • Post-Impression Handling:

    • Disinfection: If necessary, disinfect the impression following your office’s infection control protocols.
    • Pouring the model: The impression can be used for making diagnostic or working models. Pour the impression with gypsum or another suitable material immediately after it is taken to avoid any dimensional changes.
  • Cleaning the Equipment:

    • Clean any trays and tools used for handling the compound after use. The compound can be reused by reheating if necessary.
